Hilo International Airport is located in Hilo, Hawaiʻi County and serves most of East Hawaiʻi. It is one of two major airports on Hawaiʻi Island and one of five major airports in the state. One theory about ITO says it was named after an early station manager, Mr. Ito. Though with HIL and ILO already taken, Hilo International likely took its three-letter code from the nickname HIlo TOwn.
