Co-located with the military Station Group Banak, the airport is owned and operated by the state-owned Avinor. An airport at Lakselv was first proposed out of military considerations. Despite a Norwegian neutrality policy, there was a fear that Norway could be occupied by foreign powers to take advantage of the country's strategic position.
